The Town of Southbury

Southbury is in western New Haven County. It was incorporated in 1787. The Town has 39 square miles and almost 20,000 residents. One visit, and you'll know why we say there's much to see, much to do, and much to experience in and around Southbury. It is one of Connecticut's most scenic, historic towns. Surrounded by the rolling hills of Central Connecticut, Southbury is comprised of rural countryside, charming suburban neighborhoods, and districts rich in the history of America's heritage. It is a unique area of charming New England lifestyles, public squares and town meetings. The town has three beautiful parks, including Southford Falls, and the 604-acre Kettletown Park with its falls, hiking trails, wading beach, and small boat launch onto a wide scenic lake. Historic Preservation

In 2009 Southbury was noted for its dedication to preserving its historical heritage and has been named a Preserve America community by the federal government. In a letter from First Lady, Michelle Obama, she states, "Your community holds a treasured place in the American story, and it is through your vision and dedication that our history will be upheld and our future will be renewed." Five historic districts and nine buildings in town have been documented with the National Register of Historic Places as historically and architecturally significant.

Natural Beauty

Southbury is truly a "green" town with over 15 percent of its land protected by the local land trust, as well as the Audubon Society's Bent of the River preserve. Southbury is rich in natural beauty and wildlife, which we are committed to preserve through sound planning and careful growth. You can even see majestic Bald Eagles swooping down at the base of Shepaug Dam to feast on freshly caught fish.

Transportation

We are blessed with an excellent network of highways. Interstate I-84 connects Southbury to exciting attractions as well as excellent medical care. Some of the best specialists and hospitals in the country are not far away. I-84 also connects to I-684 for a convenient two-hour drive to Manhattan, the city that never sleeps. You can skip the drive to LaGuardia and Kennedy for air travel. From Southbury, you're about the same distance to both the Westchester County Airport and Hartford's Bradley International Airport. Bradley was named as a top 10 airport by readers of Conde Nast Traveler (2020) and USA Today (2021).

When you live in Southbury, you're surrounded by beautiful state parks, entertainment venues, dining, museums and galleries, vineyards, sports, education and a variety of local sites and attractions. Drive just 10 minutes north, past rustic red barns and green hills, and you're in Woodbury, the Antiques Capital of Connecticut with dozens of quaint shops tucked back along the road where serious collectors and browsers alike can find their personal treasures. The town's historic architecture matches the beauty of the surrounding landscape. A little further away is Litchfield County, dotted with classic New England covered bridges, scenic towns. Don't miss the picturesque West Cornwall Bridge spanning the Housatonic River. Roxbury, just a few minutes away, is a picturesque, historic small town. It is the birthplace of the Green Mountain Boys, three cousins of Revolutionary War fame named Baker, Ethan Allen and Seth Warner. Danbury is less than half an hour west on I-84. It is home of the legendary Danbury Fair and the spectacular Danbury Mall — a "whatever you need" shoppers paradise. For outstanding concerts throughout the summer months, visit the Charles Ives Center an open-air amphitheater surrounded by natural hiking trails and picnic groves. Travel east for about 25 minutes on I-84 to Waterbury and experience the fabulously restored, historic Palace Theater where you'll enjoy outstanding concerts, and the best that Broadway has to offer.
